Shakespeare Comedy Vs Tragedy

Many critics, dramatists, and readers alike usually consider tragedy to be superior to comedy. I agree and believe that these people are correct. Comedy does attract a large field of viewers and of a much younger and older age but the tragedy affects many more people. The tragedy gives a person a suspense that they usually cannot get from the comedy. The tragedy can be about something that is unrealistic or something in the future with a major event and a major plot. People are attracted to the suspense a film or reading can produce more than a laugh. If I were to read a story or a play I would much greater prefer a suspenseful story then something that makes me laugh during it. I’m going to help show why I believe tragedy is greater …show more content…
It ends sorrowfully and disastrously, an outcome that seems inevitable” (pg. 682 book). In current times a T.V. serious that is a tragedy that is very popular would be The Walking Dead. Its shows a lot of suspense and the characters are faced with an overwhelming force of zombies and it seems that they will all die inevitably but the show continues and gives the viewers a suspenseful story line. An example of tragic style play would be the scene from Doctor Faustus. In this scene it is considered Elizabethan tragedy because the tragic hero (Dr. Faustus) has a flaw or makes an error in his judgement that eventually leads to his own doom. The entire time his error eats him alive. He shows his doubts with the first time he talks in act 2 scene 1, lines 0-15 by not knowing whether siding with god or hell and he’s not …show more content…
I can produce the hand-bag at any moment. It is in my dressing-room at home. I really think that should satisfy you, Lady Bracknell.” (Pg. 668)
This could be found comical because Jack is telling Lady Bracknell that she should be happy with him presenting a hand-bag that he considers to be a parent of a type. It could be comical because Lady Bracknell is a high class women and he is saying she should be happy with a hand-bag as Jacks parent. Personally I do not see this seen that funny at all.
I fully support and believe that tragedy will always be superior to comedy. The mood is comedy is always a laugh or bright trying to get to you laugh and be funny. Tragedy does not do that. The ending is not always good like in comedy but that ending ends in disaster. You can take the same story plot of both types of themes and reverse the ending and can change the entire plot. The tragedy will always gather more attention because suspense is what keeps a person interested. A person cannot stop reading or looking at something if they are full of suspense waiting for the major action to come. While in comedy you can be laughing but also be sidetracked more easily. While reading anything a suspense reading will lure you in and make you want to finish it but a comedy will make you laugh and not have that luring affect to keep you reading or coming back to read or watch. Tragedy will stay superior over comedy until the

Leading back to the times of Ancient Greece, literary tragedy had existed as moralistic tales told at festivals. They spoke of conflict within societies, in people and especially with the gods. In these complex stories, characters would make decisions in hope of leading themselves to an ‘ideal’ situation but end up in a situation of inescapable disaster. Centuries later, the general ideas and dramatic forms which make up these tragedies, transcends time. In the movie, West Side Story, the concept of literary tragedy exists through the plot structure, the implication of a tragic hero, and the insinuation of inevitable…

I think that both fear and pity are necessary because I feel that both of these emotions combined are what make humans stand out from other animals. The term that comes to mind when thinking of movies that only invoke a certain type of emotion is the movies genre. For movies that invoke only fear the genre is horror and for movies the invoke only pity the genre is drama. I think that Aristotle required both emotions to form a tragedy because he wanted the audience to truly connect with the characters to feel for them. In life it is rare to only experience one emotion at a time so by including both of these emotions a tragedy is more lifelike and connectable.…

In Act 1, Shakespeare uses Lord Capulet, Montague's servants, and Juliet's nurse to show that there is humor, which impacts the meaning and tone of the play. Indeed, anybody could tell you that the play "Romeo and Juliet" is a tragedy. Although, Lord Capulet, Juliet's father, makes awfully comical jokes during the masquerade in Act 1.…

Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
