An obsession is an irrational and disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling. This dictionary definition of the word “obsession” leaves much to speculation. Does an obsession have to be irrational to be an obsession? Is the idea or feeling required to be unreasonable in order to be the subject of obsession? Much evidence and many recourses state the contrary. An obsession is a powerful preoccupation, a want, not a need. An obsession can be of something rational, as it says in the dictionary, the key word is “often.” An obsession isn’t always irrational or unreasonable, in fact, most of the technology and ideals of our society came from obsessive people and their obsessions. An obsession is a thought or idea that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.
