Names have the power to define a human based purely on that fact that a name is a person’s title. People do not have the power to choose what they are called, but they are able to recreate names to represent themselves, and peers generate playful nicknames to help themselves define a person. Where names came from has significance in characterizing a human being. Personally, I believe it is important for me to have an understanding of the names and the nicknames given to me for the purpose of being able to contemplate and enjoy them on a greater level. The origins my first name, Sydney, my middle name, Lynn, and the various nicknames given to me by companions in my opinion, are more valuable than the names themselves, and are salient instruments in defining myself.

The middle name Lynn has been passed down through generations of influential women within my life. I carry my middle name with pride knowing that it has a relevant connection to my family. The name itself has no direct meaning to it nor do I find the harsh sound of it appealing. Truley Lynn is just a dull and tired name, but who wears the name allows it to blossom into something with a profound worth. Both my Grandmother and Mother are intellectual, elegant, strong willed, and admirable role models who influence me personally each day. I am truly honored to carry a name that both of these women have created to be a symbolism for beauty and grace. I hope to carry the name with as much dignity as my family does and I plan on passing the middle name Lynn to my daughter one day. I do not admire the name Lynn itself, but rather I cherish the individuals who have given the name to me and who have shown me to wear the name with
