Empathy: “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Empathy is something everyone has, whether you like it or not we all have feelings for some. Whether they are positive thoughts or negative thoughts. Growing up me and my older brother were raised to be nice loving individuals. We were always told to treat others how we wanted to be treated. Empathy has been a big thing in my whole family. From Susan Lanzoni “ A Short History of Empathy” she writes “empathy is a willingness to understand an individual's situation.” Empathy is shown in our day to day lives through facial expression to how we communicate with other. For me empathy ruled a good portion of my life while watching family die. We really got a good understanding of what empathy truly meant. In Heidi Ramirez “ Community Re-discovered” short readying she explains how empathy is shown through smaller community. “ Simply starting a conversation with neighbors is social interchange, the building blocks of a strong community” (pp1.) A far better approach to meeting people then looking them up on Facebook and judging them. If we took Heidi’s outlook on community building and cared for those around us Empathy would be revamped. Ramirez talked about organizing a neighborhood watch. Which effectively makes a community feel safer bring them closer to each other and more empathetic with one another. “Over 80 percent believed that moral values and trust were stronger when they were growing up.” (pp6.)
