When you look up “Home” in a dictionary, the definition is a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household (Dictionary). However, home means much more than just a structure of walls. Home is when you’re with people who make you happy, love you, and support you. Home can be one person that you love, your family, or your best friend.

Then, if they break up they feel lost because they’ve just lost what they considered home. In the song “Home” it says, “Home is whenever I’m with you” (“Genius”). Throughout this song these two people are singing to each other expressing their love. All they want to do is come home and be with the other person because that is their home. My oldest sister goes to college and only comes home once every two months. My other sister is already moved out and I only get to see her every 3-4 months. However, when we are together, I know that I never want that moment to end. L. Frank Baum once said “There’s no place like home” (“Goodreads”). Is the place you call home actually your ‘home’? In the story “Illinois” the author, Savannah Carpenter uses imagery, personification and point of view to develop and express the idea that at times, places, where you feel most accepted and belonged, may not be the place you call home. Carpenter sets the story in Illinois with the main character working as a bricklayer named Ken. Ken has been in the town his whole life and is accepted and loved by the town, even so, he always thought of the ocean. Sonsyrea Tate once said, “You can leave home all you want, but home will never leave you.” This statement gives light to a higher meaning of the word “home” than merely a place to live. Many people look at home as a place or a dwelling, but not many people see home as a state of mind; however, home is a state of mind. The Architizer defines home as a complex, interpretational, and unique way of organizing and understanding the space within ourselves and the way the world around us is constructed (Linda Bennett, "Architizer"). With this definition, one can assume that “home” includes heavy influences on feelings, thought, and actions.…

We can turn anything, anywhere into a “home”. Four walls do not define home, home is rather defined by the state of mind the person is in when referring to “home”. Home to me is the house that I grew up in, the river that I spent many summers getting burnt to a crisp tubing down, the smell of my childhood bedroom when I walk into it for the first time in a while. Home is the bumpy dirt road that my truck barrels down in the back woods that I grew up in. Home is my daughter’s toys thrown all over the house, and the love that I feel when I come home after a long day at work.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…
