Definition Essay: Fran-Tastic Animal Shelter

The charity I chose is called “Flan-tastic” Animal Shelter. A co-worker of mine passed away a few year ago so the company started a charity in recognition of her with all proceeds going to a local animal shelter since she loved animals. I chose ten friends from work since they are the easiest to access because we work with each other every day. The favors I performed was as follows: 1. Walk to other end of the building to get water and ice for one of my coworkers. 2. Bringing lunch for another co-worker. 3. One friend I remembered likes ginger-ale so I brought her a ginger-ale to drink. 4. One friend in general conversation said she needed lemon and lime for her water so I offered to buy her some lemons and limes and bring them to work. 5. …show more content…
I was also hopeful that the people I did not do favors for would also contribute to the charity. I went to get water for my co-worker the day prior but when asked for a charitable donation, she said she did not have any money to give. The co-worker that I brought lunch for, was able to donate five dollars towards the charity. I purchased a ginger-ale for a friend and when asked for a donation, she obliged by donating the loose change she had in her wallet. The friend that I purchased the lemons and limes for was also willing to donate towards the charity. She gave the largest donation by writing a check. I was actually surprised because I did not ask for a specific amount. I only asked that they donate what they could and she went above and beyond. The new hire that I had given one dollar to in order to purchase something from the vending machine was also willing to donate. She made a comment that she would give me the dollar back that I loaned her as a donation to the charity. Not so sure I would classify this as a donation since she said it was her way of paying me back. There were five people that I did not do favors for and out of the five people, only two people donated. I found this to be interesting because I never realized that some people help out of feeling

2 Is panhandling really solving any problems? Panhandlers will be seen on the sidewalks, exit ramps and on the side of the highway receiving money or donations from people passing by in cars. Panhandlers begging people for money on the side of the road does not solve any problems. They are not solving the problem that they are homeless or the problem that they do not contribute anything positive to society. They do not help themselves by taking money out of people’s pockets to help themselves.…

In November, a New York police officer named Larry DePrimo bought a homeless man a pair of boots for the winter. The homeless man was later found to be a panhandler who would rather live begging on the streets than let anyone help him. In the article "Holiday Compassion Can Hurt". Micheal Medved tells readers that it would be better to donate their money to an organization, rather than giving it to just anyone on the streets . I would agree with the author in saying not to trust random people with the money we give to them.…

I don’t believe that the generous act of giving/donating should be measured or quantified with only currency. What should be a consideration is that there are organizations and people who want to contribute to and are willing to help those in need, their kindness. Kenny’s very biased definition of charity may or may not be accepted by others, as charity is something that people base off their own individual…

I hope people but not because I pity them that because I know where they've been, because I walked in their shoes. Maybe not exactly the same, maybe the details or tweaked a little and maybe one of us has it worse off than the other but nonetheless you help people because you want to. I remember one day I was in the thrift store and there was a little girl and her older sister and her mom was fine with buying the younger one all these nice clothes but the older one can even have one shirt that she wanted at this time I was probably only 13 years old but even then even without knowing what it felt like to not have the money to pay for something I didn't know how it felt to not feel the same, to not feel equal as others so as she walked away I proceeded to grab that shirt bring it to the front and pay for it in secrecy. I put in a bag and right after they walked out the door I ran out to them and I said hey, I think you forgot a bag they acted confused because I could've swore they got everything…

The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Homelessness has become an epidemic in America. It is a situation that is dismissed and ignored because people like to blame the homeless for their own dismay. People like to state that homelessness is a result of laziness and all they need to do is get a job. I never had to worry about whether I was going to have food on the table or a place to sleep. I have been fortunate enough to live a life where I have everything I need to live comfortably.…

Helping out someone or some organization in their time of need can be mutually rewarding but it can also have its drawbacks. Sometimes it can create a level of dependency that wasn’t expected. Being a crutch for people to lean on may not compel them to do for themselves, especially if they know they always have someone to fall back on in their time of need. I usually never had a problem helping out my family, friends and even charities but there comes a time where you step back and wonder if what you are doing is a good thing or a bad thing. It is real easy to get taken advantage of if you don’t keep your guard up and look at things from a neutral perspective.…
