Defining Digital Divide When you discuss anything relating to technology you often can find a wide variety of meanings for certain terms and often have to read deeply to understand them. Digital divide is a huge example of this. It can have many different meanings, but there is a general consensus that it refers to the different gaps in technological advancements across the globe. According to Oxford Dictionaries, digital divide is defined as “The gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the Internet, and those who do not” (Oxforddictonaires.com). This could be taken many different ways. You could look at the division between wealth, race, gender, or region. I believe that technology has changed a lot over the past decade to bridge the gap of digital divide but it certainly is not over. That’s way their definition needs slightly altered, to included a key part of digital divide I believe they are missing. That is communication, digital divide is not about the lack of technology to certain people, but the lack of communication between those types of people. People who don’t believe in the digital divide have simply just not looked into the research behind the subject. We need to solve the issue of this communication to be able to stop digital divide. Ultimately, we must continue working toward a world with seamless technological access, and communication to every part of the world.
