While growing up, a child is influenced by everyone around him/her. They learn from their peers; they rely on their adults. Almost every child needs someone to look after them until a certain point in their lives where they can finally take care of themselves. This point in someone’s life varies person to person. To some people it is an age aspect that defines adulthood, to others it is maturity. To me, adulthood is a point where a child has experienced enough to make their decisions for themselves and others. When I was young, thunderstorms frightened me. Growing up is something we go through from the time we are born to the time we die. We start off being helpless, alone and wondering what our next move will be. We rely so much on our parents to give us guidance, knowing right from wrong and learning how to survive on our own. As time goes on, we grow up into a teenager where we think we know everything about the world and that we are entitled to everything. After we grow out of the teenager stage we begin into adulthood where we make our choices, decisions, and plan out our career path.…

The normative concept of adulthood is framed around the ideals of independence and responsibility overlapped with social practices of independent living and work (Fumanti, 2011), however when work is mixed with study the normative framework of adulthood is challenged. Firstly, transitioning into adulthood was once thought of as linear, reflecting the shift from student to worker (Andres & Wyn, 2010), however the merging of markers of adulthood, such as employment, with marker of youth, such as education, has created a non-linear trajectory of transition (Goodwin, & O'Connor, 2005). Within a single day a young person may engaged in both institutions, demonstrating a fluidity in identity and their social role that has altered how the transition…

In your lifetime you will arrive at an age when you begin to think you are now an adult and have now reached a strong maturity level. That age is different for everyone and is defined by many different events such as a death, a party, a ritual and other life moments. In today's society, there is no reason to hold a traditional coming of age ritual. In modern times not everyone is brought up in a family that will supply a traditional celebration like a Quinceañera or a Bat or Bar Mitzvah and yet, people will still make it to the end of their road.…

What is adulthood? Biologically adulthood is after a person hits puberty, yet politically it is the day one turns 18 and their parents no longer are responsible for their care. However, none of these really describe adulthood. The novel, Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger is about a rebellious prep-school teenager trying to navigate into the life of a mature adult. Like adulthood, Holden struggles to find what maturity really is.…

Is there a certain instance where a child transitions into adulthood, because I don't believe there is a significant moment in one's life where you become an adult. Throughout people’s lives they experience compelling and momentous situations where they gain knowledge and an awareness of the realities of life. I’ve always been a child at heart, I love water balloon fights, building snowmen, and having tea parties while playing cards with my sisters. But just because I enjoy these things doesn't make me more or less a child or an adult. I have faced the harsh realities of growing up with a disabled sibling and an absent parent due to work.…

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…
