Those are status symbols that only make a person feel beautiful. Our society puts so much stress on outward appearance that people put their health at risk just to be attractive. Studies show that “10 million American women suffer from eating disorders” (Eating Disorder Statistics 2013).One in 200 American women suffers from anorexia, and three in 100 American women suffers from bulimia. People with this disorder say it can last as long as 15 years. In some serious cases, people die from these disorders. In fact, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, including major depression. Most people with with anorexia die within 10 years after contracting the disease, the rest die after 20 years if not treated. The mortality rate of eating disorders is 12 times higher than the death rate of all causes of death for females 15-24 years old. Most people with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia were bullied about their weight at some point in their lives. These people put their lives at risk simply because our society does not consider them beautiful; they have to be super thin according to our standards.
In addition to putting their lives at risk, many people spend a great amount of time and money on their outer appearance.
