What is Literature? When asked ‘What is Literature?’ most people would think of things like poems, novels, or stories. Since the early 17th century the definition of the term “literature” has been a controversial topic. I found a quote while writing this assignment, I could not find who said it but it went along the lines of “Literature is the reflection of human experience.” I strongly agree with this quote and it supports my argument. My definition of literature is any visual or written text that produce deeper meaning and illustrate any of the following: whatever is taught, “equipment for living”, or contains power to shape thinking. An example of this would be S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” novel. Published in 1967, this work depicts the life of a fourteen-year-old boy named Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles to learn what is right and wrong which leads him to become an outsider. There are countless lessons throughout the book. Some of these include: don't judge people from the outside, keep family close, and stay gold and true to yourself. I believe the characteristic of teaching lessons is a significant factor in determining whether or not a visual or written text can be considered literature. Teaching is one of the main objectives of literature, whether it be a school textbook, a historical novel, or even fictional works. Another example that would fall under this criterion is the movie “Pursuit of Happyness”. Produced in 2006, this film reveals the life of Chris Gardner (acted by Will Smith) a homeless salesman. Gardner invest his entire life savings into bone density scanners, he attempts to sell them but most doctors are reluctant to buying these scanners to replace X-Ray machines. This leads to Chris’ wife leaving him and

    S. E. Hinton wrote the novel The Outsiders to present a complex theme that her characters have to deal with. She portrays an environment where characters created happiness for themselves but then have it destroyed by an action of grief. Throughout the book when one of the characters experienced joy there would also come pain. For example there was a character named Bob in The Outsiders that brought Cherry Valance comfort but when Bob died a great distress came over her which causes her to learn how to let go. In summary, one will understand that the author is trying to cast the theme that the main characters in the novel will experience delight, but it will get interrupted by agony.…

Many people believe that literature only comes from the thoughts and styles of writers. They also think that words don't mean anything to anyone, and that literature is just words. However it is more than just that, literature is a reflection of events in life and experiences of society. Authors like Harper Lee allow writers to share the good and bad values of human life, and it allows the reader to learn a lesson about life through the experiences of society like the author Sandra Cisneros.…

Memory As we all know, many writers and publishers all have one specific message behind their book, poem, or even short stories in order to give out a message that many people aren't aware of. Each theorist Martin Espada, Junot Diaz, and Chimmamada Ngozi Adichie have one main goal to prove to readers. Without metaphors, representation, and stereotyping/ single-storying, literature wouldn’t be what it is today it would just be the thought of one main genre and wouldn't have much meaning. For example, Junot Diaz has a very powerful insight on representation.…

A world without literature would be one stuck in constant reoccurrence, ignorant to others collective advancement and defeats. Telling a story whether it be a first or second hand account always has an underlying purpose for writing. This elemental component of writing allows authors to reflect and evaluate their personal accounts and decisions, it prevents readers from making the same mistakes as their past ancestors, and educates those in forthcoming centuries what trials and tribulations have led them to their current liveliness. Literature is the integrating mechanism that keeps all educational subjects at a progressive pace. When studying such topics as mathematics, science, health, art and music one must first analyze past literary works…

Literature is an essential part of any classroom, because if gives the students many different options and abilities to learn about certain subjects, work on phonics and print awareness. In my pre-k class at Downey Elementary literature is used to inform students on important ideas and concepts about their own daily lives, and then teach students about vocabulary and things of interest. The teacher in my classroom uses books that are “based on the students interest” for read-aloud, and that they are not supposed to have “themes” per say. The books for their large group reading normally corresponds with a health and safety standard that is posted in the room in several spots.…

Literature helps us to think beyond the here and now and look at life more meaningfully, through different perspectives. This is true because the following quote explains how it deepens our thoughts in the following way. Literature exercises the feelings and thoughts about another person, place or event. The reader gains wisdom into the lives and thoughts of other people very easily while reading someone else 's experiences. (Reestorff et al.,10)…
