Define Your Disease: Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

Diabetic Ketoacidosis is a disease commonly associated with individuals diagnosed with type one diabetes. The decline of insulin production in the pancreas is a primary factor in contributing to the development of this disease. An alternative source of energy in the body, besides glucose, must be utilized to maintain normal daily function. Fats, or the secondary source of energy, are broken down releasing ketone bodies. This causes the pH of the blood to decrease and become acidic, causing diabetic ketoacidosis. Due to an increase in the number of patients that have developed this disease, educational programs in diabetes clinics have been created to help these individuals learn preventive measures including self tests for urine and blood in order to keep track of ketones and glucose levels in the body. At times, patients may not comply or have difficulty with insulin therapy which leads to exaggerated effects of the disease.

Individuals who may be facing diabetic ketoacidosis will commonly experience heightened polydipsia and polyuria, an atypical feeling of excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of dilute urine, respectively. Besides these two early indications of this disease, there is a set of other specific signals that could vary amongst subjects depending on their daily lifestyle, such as eating habits, exercise, and sleeping patterns.
