The terms diagnosis and assessment are different but they tend to overlap in different areas of the mental health field. When discussing a client's initial assessment the two terms can be separate, because the assessment will come before the actual diagnosis. I would define diagnostic assessment: as a set of tools used to acquire information to determine the nature, cause, progression, and prognosis of an individual’s presented medical condition.
