In baseball, teams must use their money wisely. Blowing money on big-time players is not an option for all teams, as some teams cannot afford to purchase those high caliber players. Also, people are not always what they seem to be right off the bat, and the dark horse can be a winner in the right circumstances. The film Million Dollar Arm, directed by Craig Gillespie and the novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, written by Michael Lewis, demonstrate that a team does not need a high payroll to sign good players, and reveal that the weakest links on a team often prove to be the strongest.…

Response on Dave Barry’s “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out” Glancing around my bedroom, I observe clean floors and homework assignments sprawled out on the table as my jumbled written thoughts are on the brink of being thrown away. My collection of books is lined up neatly on a shelf along with the stuffed animals my grown-up self does not play with anymore. I can hear down the stairs and I listen to the television playing the Cleveland Brown’s football game and the microwave signaling the finished result of the leftover brisket that was in the refrigerator. In Dave Barry’s essay, “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out,” he explains that the majority of women fasten their focus on the unimportant aspects of life such as cleaning; yet through the…

Baseball is not the game that you thought it was. It has not been since 1973 when the first designated hitter was used. A designated hitter does not play defense, their one and only job is to hit for the pitcher. It has made the game stray away from its roots. Many say the designated hitter has improved baseball by making it more entertaining but in reality these players are ruining the sanctity of the game because they do not follow the same rules that all of the other players have to follow.…

I live in a world of crazy numbers and fancy acronyms, the world of sabermetrics. Originally defined by Bill James in 1980, sabermetrics is "the search for objective knowledge about baseball", yet the term has grown into much, much more. It appeared to be magic when I first learned about the masses of statistics associated with baseball. I was seven years old when my father started introducing me to his boxes upon boxes of old baseball cards.…
