By emphasizing the ultimate form of nationalism, family rather than bachelorism, and hard work to achieve financial stability, the artists portray a successfully sculpted masculine model that, by their definition, is “something to be proud of”. The song that I chose to do will be Fortunate Sons written by John Fogerty. This song was written in September of 1969. Richard Nixon was president of the US when group leader John Fogerty wrote this song. The Canadian national anthem should not be changed because Canada is not represented by a song, one word is not worth our time, and Canadians are only taking offense to the idea of having gender exclusive lyrics. First, all Canadians are familiar with the national anthem but do not live their lives according to the lyrics and more often than not, do not evaluate it word for word. Some may argue that this song is leaving a negative impression on girls and women, but “It is also hardly the source which young girls derive any meaningful interpretation of their place in Canada.” (Urback).
