Recently my twelve-year-old son, Alex received a three-day suspension from the bus driver because he was in a “so called “fight”. The only explanation I was told was that our school system has a strict “No Hit Back Policy”. For the life of me to this day, I cannot understand how a child can be punished for simply defending themselves all the while the other child is receiving the same punishment for starting the fight. The reason bulling acts take place is because of a difference in race, gender, religion, appearance, sexuality and many more. Humans in general have a tendency to look at the negative side of someone they encounter.
Bulling can lead to many drastic consequences on the brain that may greatly affect a child’s life. Children who are bullied can be effected a few different was, some children pass through and grow up with issues including anxiety, depression, social phobia and other disorders. Other children turn to self-injurious, substance abusers, school drops, and sometimes give up on life in general. Then there are those that become bullies themselves.
Bullying can alter stress hormone levels which can affect the brain function. A study performed with rats by Klause Miczek, a psychologist at Tufts University, found that bullied animals have higher amounts of stress hormone in the brain that process rewarding stimuli, like drugs of abuse. He also found that some of the brain areas held more of the hormone after the stress had ended, possibly leading to future drug abuse (O. (n.d.). Students &
