What is perseverance? The dictionary describes it as “the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult.” Merriam-Webster (2015). The act of finalizing perseverance is complete success. So I evaluated people in my desired profession, and one lady stood out among the rest. Through her trials as press secretary of the Clinton Administration she demonstrated one consistent trait. Dee Dee Myers would persevere.

Dee Dee Myers, a graduate of Santa Clara University in California, worked as a press secretary and communication strategist on many political campaign. In 1991, she joined the presidential campaign for Bill Clinton and he became the forty-second President of the United States of America. Mrs.

Myers with Michael McCurry (press secretary for the State Department). Using her determination and perseverance, Dee Dee appealed to President Clinton for her job. Clinton not only let Myers keep her job; he gave her a raise, a better office and took her from being a deputy assistant to special assistant. The President remarked later that Myers was a loyal aide and had worked very hard on the campaign trail. “In addition to doing a very difficult job,” Dee Dee states “every article that was written about me included some type of commentary about my hair or my clothes… I am not a fashion icon, I wish I was… but I am not” (YouTube 2010). Part of Leon Panetta’s complaint was “the message” was getting lost in Dee Dee’s hair or outfits. One Article, in Vanity Fair, called “The White House Beast” showcased her brilliant efforts to defuse an issue but muddled with insignificant details about her personal appearance to discredit her accomplishments. Even so, Dee Dee’s response was, “I handled it by ignoring it, maybe it wasn’t the right thing to do but that’s what I did.” A difficult job for anyone, made more difficult because of gender.
