One of the issues with the family is the fact that parents are not always available for their children. The Janet Giele article states that "working mothers have decreased the time available for parenting". When Ms. Reese was not available to her biological son Matthew would be able to be with him thus making him an essential part of the family. Matthew can also provide the two to the Reese family and they can reciprocate. Being a member of the family carries social and economic responsibilities. Due to a lack of social structures to help either the Tanksley family or the Reese family they found each other to fill voids. This can ease social and Monterey pressures. Many men are busy working very long hours to support themselves. Women, now playing a larger role in the work force, they too are working long hours. Men are no longer as necessary as they were back when divorce rates were as low as they were in the 1950s. Throughout history marriage was needed to do things such as own property or achieve a social status. Giesle states that" government welfare payments....made fatherless families a viable option". This shows that people do not need to be together to survive financially. Although people are still divorced it is due to the lack of necessarily of the marriage and the social programs put in place that allow men and women to support themselves. Due to this new ability to support themselves people over time will be able to make better decisions on who they decide to marry and start a family
