What is the American Dream? According to google definitions the American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. The Declaration of Independence protects what the American Dream is. The Declaration of Independance protects individuals rights, and states that “…all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” There are countless definitions of what the American Dream is to different people, but does that really matter? The American dream can be whatever you want it to be. My American Dream is the pursuit of happiness and the opportunity to pursue a career that you love doing. It can be as simple as that. The American Dream has changed many times over that past couple of decades. It has went from being a land of better opportunity, by make yourself richer, and fuller in the beginning. Rockefeller is the richest man in modern history. Rockefeller is a perfect example of the American Dream because he wasn’t born into a ton of money, but through hard work and determination he became a household name. Rockefeller’s American Dream was to become wealthy and succeed through business. Of course his success didn’t come without obstacles. Rockefeller had such a big and successful business that the U.S. government considered it a monopoly. After that congress placed a variety of antitrust acts to try and dissolve the monopoly Standard Oil created. That is why I think Rockefeller is such a good example of the American Dream. He was so good at business that the United States government had to make laws to stop Standard Oil from growing
