How Are Parents Affecting A Child's Deciding On A Career?

Deciding on a career is a major step in one's life for not only does it affect his work hours but it alters the course of his life, accordingly; one must choose his profession based on what he wants for himself. Parents would argue that because it is such a major leap, they should intervene with the child's decision, and while that may be true, intervening too much has many consequences. Affecting the child's psychology, choosing a career path he does not love and the fact that parents might want to fulfill their own dreams through their children, are all reasons to why parents should not be too involved in the child's career decision.

Parents have lived longer than their children and they have had the chance to commit mistakes and learn from them, as a result parents tend to be more logical and practical. However, just as the parents were allowed to make mistakes they should also allow their children to have their fair share of failures and learn their own lessons. In her article, teacher Jessica Lahey (2011) stated that it is essential for parents to teach their children not to fear failing and except it as an inevitable part of reality they need to face and learn from. She also says that being over protective and not letting the children live their own experiences is detrimental for not only their academic performance but it also touches most aspects of their lives for it will decrease their chances of being independent and competent.
