Deception In The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night

Ever since Adam and Eve, deception has been used throughout human history as a means for personal gain and to intentionally harm others. Webster’s dictionary definition defines deception as, “an act or statement intended to make people believe something that is not true.” However, in the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the author, Mark Haddon, uses deception in a noble sense. A character in this novel that exemplifies deception more than anybody else is Christopher’s father. This caring man has a full time job while single-handedly caring for his autistic son, Christopher. Unfortunately, the man deceived Christopher by telling him that his mother died of a heart attack.. However, the father did this out of love and …show more content…
Logically, after his father lied to him, Christopher believes his best and only option is to find his mother in London. This unnecessary journey already had a problem before it even started. While running away from home, he is quoted on saying, “I was frightened of being far away from a place I was used too” (136). So right off the bat, Christopher is very nervous venturing out into the vast world. Plus his autism, which creates social awkwardness around people, does not equal a recipe for success. Disregarding this, he goes through with the plan and almost meets certain death. During the journey, Christopher carried in his jacket pocket, his pet rat named Toby. At the train station, he loses Toby and eventually finds him on the railroad tracks. Caring for his pet, Christopher jumps down onto the railroad tracks to retrieve him. Fortunately, if it wasn’t for a good samaritan standing by the tracks, Christopher and his pet rat would of been road kill. Plus, his autism put a huge damp on this journey. On page 170, while looking at all the signs within the large room, all these signs clumped together inside his head. So much so, that he states how his, “brain wasn’t working properly.” Plus the loud noises of a bustling train station and the literal thousands of people walking by him made him feel very uncomfortable and threatened. This all culminates together to him pulling out his Swiss Army knife on a citizen who simply asked him if he was lost (171). This life threatening journey could have all been avoided if Christopher never discovered the truth of his deadbeat mother. Possibly, if the father would of been honest and told Christopher the truth right from the beginning, this life threatening situation could have been

Detaching his mind at will, leads Christopher to be an unreliable narrator. Christopher is an unreliable narrator because he gets very sidetracked at points while trying to explain something. For instance when Christopher is running away from his Father, he hides behind the shed and starts to describe a metal pan, but then he starts talking about how far London is from where he is now. “There was the circular lid of a very old metal pan leaning against the wall.…

When Christopher realizes that his dad has killed Wellington, he thinks that he may be in danger and that he must get out and leave as soon as he can. He makes the decision that he must go on a journey to live with his mother in London and when he is talking to Mrs. Alexander he tells her his plan: “I’m going to live with my mother because Father killed Wellington, and he lied and I’m frightened of being in the house with him” (134). This specific example is of Christopher’s physical journey; however, he does also go through an emotional journey while on his quest to find his mother. He overcomes many of the fears and behavioural problems that he has, doing so all on his own without the support of his father or teacher. When Christopher is in the train station, he knows that he must go through the tunnel to get to the train, but he is extremely scared, and compares it to standing on the edge of a cliff; however he finds a way to overcome his fear, and go through the tunnel: “And it was like stepping off the cliff on a tightrope.…

While the book does mention this several times, it doesn't seem to be the key reason for why Christopher undertook this journey as it is made out to be in the movie. I think the reason for the movie choosing to rely more heavily on the family issue side of the story is simply because it's easier for the audience to understand. Even Jon Krakauer who has spent years of his life researching and following Christophers journey does not fully understand what made him act the way he…

Many people who hear of Christopher’s story think he’s a fool. Who in their right mind would burn all of their money, trash their car, and walk across the country to live in the wilderness? However, this is just the surface of something much deeper, and if you were to read into the facts of Christopher’s life you would see that he is the hero of his story. He had a dream and he risked everything, up to and including his life, to achieve it. Life can be incredibly overwhelming at times and to be able to find the peace that Christopher found, even if that peace only lasts four months, would be nothing short of incredible.…

Even though many people would think that was evil to do he was just trying to keep a good image of his mother in Christopher’s. He did not want him to think that his mother left him. “They asked me who my family was. I said it was Father, but Mother was dead,” (pg.14). Even though Christopher’s dad lied to Christopher it was just to protect Christopher.…

When Christopher starts lying about his investigation, he starts lying and sneak around. This causes a drift in his relationship with his father. In the beginning of the book, Christopher wanted to talk to his father about the dog. Take for instance, when Christopher says “I like Wellington and I went to say hello to him, but I didn’t know that someone had killed him… I am going to find out who killed Wellington” (20).…

Christopher’s spectrum disorder creates a roadblock that makes it harder for him to communicate with other people. Mark Haddon wrote, “And I was sitting on the ground and the woman knelt down on one knee and she said, ’Is there anything I can do to help you?’ And if she was a teacher at school I could have said, ‘Where is 451c Chapter Road, Willesden, London NW2 5NG?’ but she was a stranger, so I said, ‘Stand further away,’ because I didn't like her being so…

In the Curious Incident, Christopher is shown to be different through his behavior problems, inability to socialize and his odd choices of likings. Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious incident of the Dog in the Night-time was published in 2003, and was hugely criticized for its inaccurate interpretation on the Asperger’s syndrome, by the people suffering from it if not directly pointed at. However, this was one of Christopher Boone’s, the main character’s, most defining features as it made him unique. This made it difficult to talk to others and interact with them very well, making his investigation on the death of the dog just that more harder and intriguing. Another feature that made him more interesting was his thought process, which was detailed,…
