Deception In Stephanie Ericsson's The Ways We Lie

Deception is one of the many ways to make a person believe in things about yourself or others that is not necessarily true. People are dishonest towards one another every day. They either do this to avoid problems or to create them. Although, lying is the norm for society it can be quite detrimental. The truth is that a lie is not just a simple story created with the intent to hurt. It is a way of escaping the reality of a problem or it is a last resort because you do not want to embarrass yourself by being honest. Moreover, the adage “honesty is the best policy” does not always ring true for many. Sometimes we have to lie in order to get to the truth. In Stephanie Ericsson’s “The Ways We Lie,” we find that lying is a natural and unavoidable act. For example, “The White Lie,” this is a form of deception where we avoid telling the truth because we do want to upset our friend or family member. As this is done the person forgets the most important details about the truth. An example of this is when there is a crime and the detective has found a person that might be the perpetrator. In a haste to get a confession the detective will neglect to tell the person certain details about the crime. This can lead to a wrongful conviction because the person may have been pressured to confess to something that they did not do. An unwillingness to share details that are important can ruin the truth. At times people may think that they are being helpful by concealing certain things, but in reality they are causing harm because the person might implicate his or herself or they end up angry and confused since they did not know the actual
