Decent Essays
Our shared interest in consignments shops is what initially peaked our interest in this project. What made this project even more appealing to us, is getting the opportunity to analyze a thrift store from the vantage point of our current readings. We get to look at objects as more than mere objects and as items that hold a legendary backstory. A bonus to that is discovering the historical significance an item as simple as a lamp could have. This project will allow us to look at consignments shops in an academic sense and realize that everything is not truly what it appears to be. We both will be conducting our consignment shop visits at Finders Keepers Furnishings, here in Decatur. Our visits will be a week apart from each other’s. We will

These products lasted only a few weeks in regular store shelves, before the public completely rejected them. The story serves the purpose to present the ironical situation that they’re in, and capture the reader’s attention, by demonstrating how the failure of those products, resulted in the success of the museum. “Perhaps nobody wanted to contemplate the prospect of failure” (Burkeman 2012). Perhaps this is the reason why many of the big industries continued to fail prospectively, because even after having more than one unsuccessful product, they did not stop to analyze the defects, and reconstruct them to produce something better.…

Breen also seems to neglect the goods that were commonly used of American manufacturers. He mentions multiple examples of American furniture in museums and galleries that show the quality and beauty of family friendly manufactures. Breen himself refers to "modern museums where these articles still proudly document an expanding world of goods" in his list of sources of evidence for his research. In his review of these museums, he seems to ignore items of colonial manufacture in his enthusiasm to promote his thesis on the necessity of the "empire of goods" on the coming…

Walter Gordon Merritt highly favored the “open shop” because he believed it allowed for union members and non-union members the opportunity to be employed. They had the chance if they were non-union members to join the union once employed as well. There was no discrimination against either unionist or non-unionist at “open shops” which was the great thing about them. Merritt believed closed shops “means closing the doors of industry to all but union men and closing transportation and the markets of the nation to all but union goods”(16). Merritt felt closed shops left people no choice but to join unions.…

Employing the examples of the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum, the African American Museum of Philadelphia, and in the end the National Museum of African American History and Culture as well as other museums, such as Chicago’s DuSable Museum and the International Afro-American Museum highlight changes that happened in museums beginning in the 60’s and beyond. From Storefront to Monument by Andrea A. Burns looks closely at these museums created in storefronts, in predominantly black neighborhoods, as well as the people involved and discusses the triumphs and hardships black museums went through from their creation, especially in regards to their attempts to compete with other, better funded, institutions. Primarily, Burns focuses on the fact that black community leaders and “the African American museums that emerged during the 1960s and 1970s challenged and re-created new national memories and identities that incorporated the ideas, events, and objects, and places tied to black history” (Burns 4). Museums in the past were places…

“Consumers Are Almost Like People”: Interpellation, Ideology and IKEA In 1976, Ingvar Kamprad produced his manifesto, “The Testament of a Furniture Dealer”. The intention of the writing was to give instruction to his IKEA co-workers about how “to create a better everyday life for the many people” through the adoption “of [a] framework of ideas” designed to “be a beneficial influence on practically all markets” (1976, pp. 2-3). By adopting such an ideological position, IKEA has been able to create a discourse that shifts the problems produced by notions of consumerism and consumer capitalism into a discourse of choice, freedom and happiness. O 'Shaughnessy & Stadler argue that through “language, texts and representations” within genres, it is…
