Debate On Epa Regulations On Disease Inducing Ozone Essay
Politicians at all levels of government have been debating issues about air quality for decades. Policy makers on both sides of the aisle want the same end result which is breathable and safe air for Americans. However, Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians differ greatly on how the issue should be tackled.
Ground level ozone is an air pollutant that causes serious health effects in humans. Ozone in the troposphere can be harmful to the lungs in both the short term and long term. Acutely, inhaled ozone decreases the function of the lungs and increases inflammation. Over time, exposure to ozone results in worse respiratory ability and can potentially lead to more serious lung diseases (Lippmann 1955).
The Environmental Protection Agency is a government agency that protects the environment through regulations on businesses such as limiting how much air pollution can be put out from a factory. It also researches the relationship between humans and the environment in order to better understand how human activity affects the planet. Ultimately, the EPA’s goal is to protect U.S. residents from potential public health issues.
