These views are often very polarized and split and they offer very different perspectives on what abortion is and what is should be. There are pros and cons of abortion and the policies that surround it. Many believe progressive abortion policies give women autonomy over their own bodies and the reproductive choices that follow. However, it is also argued that abortion is murder due to the termination of the unborn fetus. 38 states have passed laws similar to the Federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act which declares that killing or having the intention to kill an unborn child is punishable. (Pros and Cons, 2016) Opposers of the policy may argue that women who terminate their pregnancies may be violating the Act. The Federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act also states that an unborn child is a member of the Homo Sapiens Species, essentially declaring the fetus as a human being with life. This year, Pence signed into law in the state of Indiana a ban on abortions that would occur because of a fetal abnormality. (Washington Post, 2016) Also this law declares the remains of an aborted fetus must be cremated or interred. Many state and local level laws weigh heavy on the procedure of abortion and how it can be conducted. Although most states begin to ban abortions after 20 weeks, states like North Dakota decided up to 6 weeks past a women’s last period (when a fetal heart beat can be found) is the cutoff for an abortion.
