They say it is one of the most unforgiving places on the planet. Five-thousand-nineteen square miles of desert wasteland, Death Valley is located in California about one-hundred miles west of Las Vegas. On July tenth, nineteen thirteen, it broke the official record for the hottest air temperature ever recorded in the world: one-hundred-thirty-four degrees Fahrenheit. That’s just the official recording. On July fifteenth nineteen seventy-two, the temperature is said to have reached two hundred one degrees. At day, the intense heat alone evaporates any semblance of liquid within minutes. At night, temperatures can drop below freezing. Humans have managed to thrive at every corner of the Earth, from the edges of the blustering Arctic tundra to the innermost depths of the equatorial jungle. The Timbisha Shoshone tribes are the one group known to have inhabited the Valley. Even they migrated through for only a few weeks a year, and solely while it was at its most temperate conditions. In the last fifteen years, dozens of people have died from the sheer heat. Death Valley is one of the few places on Earth …show more content…

At first glance, it appears as if the Valley finally received some snow. The monochromatic ground is only distinguishable by its varying textures. Some areas look like the doing of a six-year old who rummaged the recycling bin: hexagonal Styrofoam plates, arrayed like tiles, are grouted together by shaving cream. Other areas look like they had been synthesized by a chemist in a lab. Countless square feet are carpeted by crystalline structures that look too perfect to be natural. The alkaline flats stretch to the horizons, and I can’t see the edges. A treaded path, greyed by the footsteps of tourists, leads

The Badlands formed from a complex geologic setting. The topography that we see today is formed from erosion of the soft and not well-consolidated rocks. The oldest rocks found at The Badlands National Park are the Upper Cretaceous mudstones of the Pierre Shale (Graham, 2008). Overlying the Pierre Shale is the Fox Hills Formation, and overlying the Fox Hills Formation is the Tertiary White River Group. The White River Group contains a paleosol that are bright red.…

The processes that formed the area are amazing to think about how a once ancient sea bed became one of the nation’s top tourist spots. The inland sea that left a deposit after deposit of sandstone and shale. Then an intrusive magma that made its way through the crust, only to cool and become granite and pegmatites. This magma changed the existing rocks making schists and quartzite. After the inland sea receded erosion dominated the area eroding many layers of rock that had been deposited.…

When one thinks of Detroit or Michigan in general, they automatically think of the musicians and sports teams that came from there; Madonna, Eminem, Kid Rock, The Tigers, The Lions, and The Red Wings. One assumes when someone talks about Detroit that they live there and give the person the utmost respect despite only visiting or living outside of the city. What caused Detroit's descent from a wealthy, vital city into one where "ruins" are common and the city is bankrupt? The lack of care and concern from the people who are in the charge of the city and its people. Despite all of these attractions, the city is still in ruins and is still in major debt.…

In one hike you can get it all: redwood groves, wildflower-filled meadows, rocky outcroppings, cascading creeks and sweeping views. This is Sonoma County at its best, the Pomo Canyon Trail, a 4.5-mile stretch between a wooded campground and Shell Beach. Naturally, unless you bring two cars, enjoying the entire trail would cause you to rack up nine miles. If you start at the Pomo Canyon Campground, you might have to add another mile, as when I hiked it, the campground was closed, and I do not know if it is permanent or seasonal.…

“The Devil’s Highway” by Luís Alberto Urrea is a haunting story that gives life to the tragedy of twenty-six men who crossed attempted to cross from Mexico to America through the Arizona desert, with only fourteen surviving the trek. It is a story that I am familiar with, as I had to read the book for introduction to agriculture education last year. It is a book that has haunted me since and until this class I was determined not to ever read it again. This is because the images of charred corpses and the retelling of death by hyperthermia left a knot in my stomach ever since I first read the book. However, rereading it I was able to better examine the elements that left my pained my heart and chilled my soul for greater meaning.…

While the man was on the road, he was beaten by robbers to the point where he could not get up and walk. While he was lying there, a priest passes him by without offering any help, and so did a Levite. Jesus seemed to have been challenging the religiousness of the two religious groups, by implying that they put their righteousness rituals before the well-being of others who they are supposed to love. The specific implications were that the priest and the Levite were unwilling to become unclean by touching a dead body, or blood, therefore they would not want to touch the man who was hurt. The third man who passed the beaten man was a Samaritan.…
