Life is Precious
Have you ever had a death sentence hanging over your head? On January 8, 2004, I was basically given a death sentence. I was told that if I did not make some drastic health changes, I would probably not live more than seven years. I was morbidly obese and a severe diabetic. I had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, anxiety, and serious depression. I was not living life. I was completely miserable, along with my three children and my husband. On January 29, 2004, I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. That day, my life changed forever mentally, emotionally, and physically. Through the good, bad, and the ugly, gastric bypass saved my life.
According to the National Library of Medicine (2015), Roux-en-Y gastric

The doctor stood and described the surgery and how it worked. There were also former patients at the seminar. The leader of the support group stood and talked a few minutes. She let us know if we had any questions from a patient’s perspective, to please ask. On the way home from the seminar, my husband and I discussed what we had learned. We both agreed that surgery was the best option for me, because there was a good chance all of my health problems could be resolved by having gastric bypass surgery. Of course with any kind of surgery there are possibilities of complications. With the gastric bypass, the larger you are the higher the risk. At that point, we both felt like the positives outweighed the negatives. Once I made the decision to have surgery, I informed Dr. Floyd’s office that I wanted to proceed. Kathy, Dr. Floyd’s secretary, started the insurance process and scheduled me for several tests. The first test was with the psychologist, Dr. Jim Keller, for a psychological exam. The point of this exam was to inform me of how rapidly my body would change and to make sure that mentally I could handle those changes. He also brought to light that there could be a possibility of mental and emotional issues. For example, if you did not have a strong marital foundation, it is possible that marriage problems may arise. Dr. Keller mentioned that the divorce rate with weight loss surgery patients was high. My visit with Dr. Keller went well, and I still felt like this was what I needed to do to get my life back. Once I got approval from the insurance company, I had bloodwork and a chest x-ray done. When Kathy received my test results, she phoned me and we scheduled my surgery. January 29th would be the day of my

This procedure can be extremely risky and is not a surgery designed for everyone looking to lose a lot of weight. Some people have died from the procedure, which is always something that the patient knows before opting to have the operation. For some people, that risk still gives them better odds than if they continue their current lifestyle. There are plenty of people who have had this surgery who have been able to lose a large amount of weight and begin the transition to a healthier life. I think that education about healthy diet and exercise should be implemented even more for people who have bariatric surgery because they must understand that this isn’t another “miracle” solution.…

Katelyn Baker 09-27-2014 Monday-Thursday 7:30-9:30 MRSA: Lori Popp’s Story I had the chance to listen to guest speaker Lori Popp talk about what happened to her after going through a bariatric operation and the complications that came with it. Her story really opened my eyes to what is happening in the world and health care settings. She taught me to be cautious because not every health care worker takes the proper precautions when working with their patients. This is how she acquired MRSA, because her surgeon did not follow proper protocol. Lori endured multiple antibiotic treatments, but more than anything she had to endure a terribly great number of surgeries; currently somewhere near 60 surgeries, to help control her MRSA infection because…

In “The meaning of King Holiday” Dr. King’s wife, says that MLK day should be a day of service. “What she means by that is how can others others serve after graduating and entering the “adult” world?” Well like MLK he didn't know what to do with his life after graduating and yet after his lifetime all races have equal rights. This dream that MLK Jr. had was so idealistic and revolutionary that it helped change the way that many people look at race in the world today. He helped sway the minds of millions to act and get rid of racism in America with simple but meaningful words to guide them on this amazing journey to freedom.…

Someone might ask about the rules and regulations of cosmetic surgeries, well, there are not enough. Early last year, Irma LeCroy was a successful Dallas real estate broker who owned two homes, a luxury car, an SUV and a small office building. Today, she is out of work, uses a walker and wheelchair to get around and says she has nothing left to her name. And it's because of what she thought was a minor cosmetic surgery procedure, fat-transfer surgery. She thought that it was a trivial surgery that doesn't need a very well trained surgeon, so she did the surgery in an unlicensed clinic and it has gone wrong.…

President Obama recently announced in a speech at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee, “Community college should be as free and universal in America as high school is today”. Community college in Tennessee is currently tuition free and saves students $3,800 in annual tuition costs as mentioned in the PBS. In the first year that Tennessee offered the tuition free college 57,000 high school seniors signed up for the programs that include counseling and mentors (PBS). Obama’s tuition free community college plan would increase the amount of students that currently attend college. There would be requirements in place to have your tuition waived; you would have have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and would have to be at least a half-time…
