Death Penalty Cases

In Missouri the year of 1993, 17 year old Christopher Simmons and two friends Charles benjamin and John Tessmer planned to murder Shirley Crook. The friends planned to commit a burglary and murder by breaking and entering, they were going to tie up the victim. The boys met up during the night but Tessmer dropped out of the plan, Simmons and Benjamin proceeded with the plan and broke into Mrs.Crooks home and bounded her hands and covered her eyes, they then drove her to the state park and threw her off a bridge. Once the case was brought to trial the evidence was overwhelming, Simmons had confessed to the murder and performed a videotape reenactment at the crime scene. Teemer made a testimony against Simmons that showed premeditation, Simmons discussed the plot and later bragged about the crime. The jury returned a guilty verdict, even considering mitigating no criminal history or his age the jury even recommended the death penalty which the trial court imposed.

This article shows that in places the death penalty has helped keep the murder rates down in their states or even county. Many people have a big mind on the death penalty but according to the article it's helping other families keep their loved ones alive. In studies it's shown that the death penalty has helped lower the murder rate by 20 percent annually. About 61 percent of Americans view the death penalty as morally acceptable, which leaves about 39 percent of americans who don't agree with the death penalty.
