Death of the Creator of Islam Muhammad was born in c. 570 in Mecca, a town in the desert plateau of western Arabia. His father passed before he was born and his mother also died when he was a young child, he became an orphan around the age of six. At about age eight, his paternal uncle adopted him in and raised him in his family. Muhammad was a hard worker who spent his time working as a Shepard to pay his uncle for his care. He later married an older widow who was a wealthy merchant and had children with her. Although not much is known about Muhammad’s early life, his prophecy is well-known around the world. Over the next few years, he received messages he believed to be divine revelations. The messages once written down and complied, they became the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam. Muhammad’s death was a turning point in history because he begun an important movement towards the religion of Islam. The Qur’an, meaning “recitation,” is broken up into different parts, called the suras; each part is believed to be God’s revelations as told to Muhammad by archangel Gabriel. The religion of Islam, meaning “submission to God”, is practiced by Muslims which means “those who submit to Islam.” For Muslims, the Qur’an the legal and moral law code by which men and women should live. Muhammad saw himself as god’s final prophet and thus preached that the worshiping of other gods be abandon, many people listen and followed; but this created conflicts with the Quraysh, the tribe that dominated the City of Mecca. The Muslims combined their religious and political institutions, instead of adding their religion to their politics. This made their political culture completely based of off religion. Muhammad also changed the direction in which Muslim would pray to, previously it being towards Jerusalem, the Jewish worship center. Muslims now turn towards Mecca, making it the most holy city in Islamic religion. Muhammad consolidated most of the Arabian Peninsula under Islam. In 632, he returned to Mecca one last time to perform a pilgrimage, and tens of thousands of Muslims joined him. After the pilgrimage, he returned to Medina, months later in 632 he died from an illness. He is currently buried in the mosque in Medina. Within a hundred years Muhammad 's teaching and way of life had spread from the remote corners of Arabia as far east as Indo-China and as far west as Morocco, France and Spain.
