The power of death can really make people do strange things. I like the overall tone of “A Rose for Emily”. Death is a constant element and theme in this story. Even though I can see death being represented in more than a physical aspect, for example death of traditions that come from the past or death of a town folk’s opinion of Emily Grierson, it is the actual descriptions of the physical deaths as well as Emily’s reaction to them from that gives this story an extremely eerie feel to it. First Emily’s father dies, which leaves her in a state of loneliness and fear. Then she kills Homer because she is afraid again of being alone. Emily herself is even described as a picture of death while she is living. Finally we have Emily’s death, which begins the story and brings an end to the curiosity of the town folk and to the story as well.
Emily’s dad was really responsible for her mentality. He ran off all of her suitors, and he was the only man in her life until the day he died. But at least she had him until that day. Her eye sockets are deep and her eye color is black. The narrator describes her as “bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that pallid hue” (Faulkner 35). But it is her air of calmness through all her experiences that symbolizes death to me. And ironically in the end, her own death was only spoke of shortly by the narrator and without much description.
There is no doubt that death is the most important theme in the story “A Rose for Emily”. The story begins and ends with it. It is described in the physical aspect as well as in symbolism as well. But what makes this theme of death very interesting to me is the descriptive way in which William Faulkner establishes the tone of the story.
