Death Of A Salesman Play Vs Play

Improved Essays
In life we all will one day face death. I watched the play “The Summoning of Everyman” found on the Chattanooga State Website. The play was more of a movie type of play. They did not use a stage so they had more of an opportunity to make the play more realistic. This version of the Summoning of Everyman had great costumes, acting, and backgrounds. The costumes of the play were exquisite. They all fit each character very well. For instance, in one scene there is a little girl and little boy that come across Everyman. The little girl was wearing a pink dress and the boy was wearing a simple blue outfit. It shows the audience that the children are innocent and wealthy. In my opinion, I did not like the Kings outfit nor did I like Death’s outfit.

The comical personalities all the characters had helped the audience become more intrigued in the story of this play. From this play, I liked that there was only one actor for each character. The theatre production of Oklahoma! incorporated a wide variety of theatrical elements throughout the play. The theatre production did a magnificent job with the western style props and setting in the theatre space. Another key factor to point is that the play production did a fantastic job ensuring that the characters dressed in a Western style. Whether it was the tan cowboy hats complimenting the boots with spurs or the women’s large dresses, the play represents the time period thoroughly.…

The Living American Dream Death of a Salesman author, Arthur Miller, uses his characters like Charlie and Bernard to represent in a metaphorical way, that the American Dream is alive. “You’re supposed to study with me today.” This quote proves that Bernard knew that education is very important in order to succeed, that’s why Bernard, in the quote above, was bothering Biff to study with him, Bernard knew that working hard and studying in school would help him get the career he wanted and help him succeed in life. “I’d like to take a trip to California.” Taking a vacation helps prove that the American Dream is real because since Charley worked hard to have a job that is stable financially, it’s easy for him to take trips when he wants, that is…

The first father-son relationship that is portrayed in The Death of a Salesman is Willy and Biff’s relationship. Willy and Biff don’t have a strong relationship in the present, but in the past, Biff had idolized Willy. To represent the theme of appearance vs reality, Miller wrote “Because if he saw the kind of man you are, and you talked to him in your way, I'm sure he'd come through for me” (Miller 118). The representation of reality vs appearance is portrayed when Biff has this idea that his father is the greatest man and everyone respects when in reality he is barely even noticed. In the present, Biff thinks that Willy's salesman dream is unreachable, “I even believed myself that I’d been a salesman for him!”…

After the first scene though the characters are costumed to different decades that also had water scandals while the play itself stayed in the same decade. I appreciated the costuming of the daughter Petra Stockman, played by Averyona Gainey. Petra was a free-spirited character and her costumes described that about her. In the last scene Petra was costumed in an outfit that was a dress with pants underneath. This costume showed the strong independent woman that Petra was.…

A costume in a regular film is a style of dress for the different character. Meanwhile this is in not a traditional film so the characters don’t have on different clothes to be considered a costume. The cute of the hair is different, body shape, and something as simple as glasses or a scarf. The main character, Romeo, costume was uppity and rich because that’s the way he owners kept him up and stayed that way the entire movie. As for his friends that had been on the streets for a while costume started off dirty and not groomed.…

One main thing that caught my eye was the background. The background always gave me an idea where the characters were located. Also the lights were somewhat the same throughout the whole scene. The main thing that the lights did was dim down to indicate that the scene was over. I came to the conclusion that the play was a satire and had a satiric tone during the whole play.…

I wasn't a fan of some of the props, such as the use of cell phones because they took away from the play itself. I didn't really care for most of the costumes and some of them didn't even look like costumes. One character just wore a t-shirt and jeans yet she was supposed to be a queen. The outfits didn't really help determine who the characters were, and that didn't really help when I was having a hard time trying to understand all that was being said during the play. I feel like my main problem with the play was really my own fault.…

During the play, an important discussion between Biff, Linda, and Happy occurs regarding the paternal alpha figure in the play, Willy. Prior to this discussion Willy displays himself as a hardworking, forgetful, and prided man. These traits begin to contradict each other which lead to this discussion about how Biff feels towards his father. There are many underlying factors that lead to why Willy has created this gossip between his kin, the concealment of the truth, and the solitude of Biff’s emotions. All of this can be scientifically traced back to the physiological impact of the Stock Market crash of 2008 and the stereotypes of its influence.…

The death of a salesman: A dysfunctional family tragedy White picket fences line the homes of your neighborhood, everyone has the traditional long haired, yellow dog running and playing with children. “The American Dream” is a main theme of “The Death of a Salesman” however, this central theme inadvertently ignores the more important underlying issues of family dysfunction; which is even more so in existence today. Financial dynamics play a huge role in Loman family dysfunction. Willie isn’t infatuated with the American dream, he is clearly obsessed with celebrity status. Think Willies recall of Biff’s big football game at Emmett’s Field, he was only happy about the game because the crown had been chanting “Loman, Loman, Loman!”…
