One will always have strong connections outside of a significant other whether it is a family member, childhood friend or coworker, but losing the person you were meant to spend 70 years with will cause your heart to sink to your stomach. No matter the relationship it will always hit you with a strong sense of emotion. Auden did a great job giving a true visual of the events and emotions that can occur after losing a loved one in his poem “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone.” Auden uses the lines, “He was my North, my South, my East and West, / My working week and my Sunday rest,”(Auden 9-10). In these lines he clearly states that this person he lost was his lover, he was his everything in the world and if there was a way that they could not be together then the world should not exist at all. He explains with the lines, “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,” (Auden 3) and he continues on with, “Let traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves” (Auden 8). When we lose someone special in our lives we stop everything were doing and there is no intention to continue on with our lives until we get that empty feeling out of our stomach. Auden felt that with the loss of his special partner the world should have just taken a break from what they were doing and just pay their respects. Just as the government orders flags at half-mast for special deaths, police have the same power to commence a movement; in this case, showing the community there was an event that needs to be noticed. He also writes, “Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead / scribbling in the sky the message He Is Dead,” representing that the world needs to see and understand Auden’s current situation an emotion. The plane moaning sound is
