Edgar Allan Poe was a man who lived a very miserable life. With his wife gone, and no friends. Poe was completely alone, with only his stories, and alcohol to comfort him. I believe in Edgar Allan Poe’s last days; he was overcome by alcohol. I believe that he was killed by alcohol because of all the hardships and horrible events that has happened with his life.
To support the fact that he died of alcoholism is because first of all as Kenneth Silverman writes in “Poe’s Final Days” “Poe was found near a tavern, worse for wear, and in great distress, looking flooded with drink, and ill from exposure.” Now Poe being found near a tavern wouldn’t be a coincidence, and him being ill is most likely because of the swift wintery weather happening at the time. In a letter to the Editor by Burton R. Pollin, and Robert E. Benedetto they state that “Evidence of Poe’s chronic binges are strewn through …show more content…
In Poe’s Final Days by Kenneth Silverman he writes “According to Moran and his wife, Poe reached the hospital in a stupor, unaware of who or what had brought him there.” Poe being drunk, wouldn’t have really noticed much going on around him. Also in the biography “He found Poe violently delirius, resisting two nurses to keep him in bed.” Alcohol can make people irrational, violent, and quick to anger. It is also said in the biography that Poe came in already having a fever. If Poe was drunk, and out walking in the cold, too drunk to think about wearing more clothing to fight the swift winds. This would’ve been the reason Poe was sick. Because he was drunk.
Edgar Allan Poe was taken away by the over use of alcohol. He was found drunk outside a saloon, and this can’t be a coincidence. His cat Caterina died with no signs of rabies, and Poe was most likely just done living. If we think about all the hardship Poe’s been through we can see that his life was a living hell. What finally brought his death to him?
