In sociology, it is said that people are brought up the way they are, due to their relationship with family, friends, and environment. Sociologist call this socialization, the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies to learn to behave in a way that is acceptable to society. Through this process, analyzation of concepts begin. In this summative response, I will be focusing on six concepts; looking-glass self, role models, primary groups, significant others, reference groups, and secondary groups. To achieve this, I will be using the movie, “Death in Gaza” that follow around three children; Ahmed (12), Mohammed (12) and Najla (16) and to show that they live life no differently than I, here in the United States. Sociologist, George Herbert Mead, constructed the idea of significant others. Significant others are people who have special importance. In the film, when Ahmed watched his friend, Hosni al Najjar, get shot and killed he started helping the resistance, to give honor to his name. Significant others have also played a role in my life. I would say my late grandfather was my significant. He always told me how to fix things in my life when it came to school and even though some plans of his I didn’t want to do, I still went through with them, and they worked! There are two main groups that contribute to this. The first one being a primary group, a small social group whose members share close, personal, enduring relationships. In the film, we are introduced to Ahmed’s family and it is proven how such a close bond between family members can cause the type of shaping and molding of a child. The family’s’ hatred of Israelis has rubbed off on the young minds so much that when Ayyah, the daughter, was asked if she liked Jews she became disgusted. Primary groups also have and continue to play an important part in my life. My best friend, Maya. We have spent 11 years of life together! Our goals are to remain friends long enough to see each other get married (become their bridesmaid) and become the god parents to each other’s children. The final group being, reference group. Reference groups are referred to as providing the needed comparison for evaluation of group and personal characteristics. During an interview with Mohammad, he said he bases a lot of his decisions on what Ahmed does. He says that he wants to do whatever Ahmed does because he’s better than the others. For me, I steadily compare myself to my cousin. We come from two very different parenting households, one where I am the only child and two where her mother continued to have an additional 17 kids after her. (Yeah not kidding).
