In this paper, I will discuss how my socialization here in America is both similar and different to Ahmed’s socialization while living in Gaza during this conflict. I will use the sociological concepts of looking-glass self, role-models, significant others, primary groups and reference groups in my paper to analyze these similarities and differences.

In the film, Ahmed’s rebellion to the Israelis and duty to his God was supported and encouraged by his fellow peers and elders, and this caused Ahmed to become further involved in the Resistance. Ahmed’s self-image was influenced by his friends and those involved in the Resistance. Others thought that he would become a strong martyr, and his own self-image was developed from their opinions of him. From my personal experience, I have discovered that other people’s opinions of me play such a strong role in my own self-image.
