What would you do living in a society as a female where your virginity was enough to kill for? In Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez, the author creates an intricate and complex plot about the journey of two twins, Pedro and Pablo Vicario, on the quest to kill Santiago Nasar, the man who allegedly deflowered Angela Vicario, to restore their family honor. Márquez does this by showing how differently men and women in their society are raised. Also, he shows how men will lead the more fruitful and prosperous life, whereas women will lead a life of suffering. The narrator states, "The brothers were brought up to be men. The girls had been reared to get married" (Márquez 31). In machismo society, the boys are brought up to be men so they can lead the patriarchy and benefit off of the oppression of women. Conversely, the girls are brought up to be married and taught all skills needed for marriage like screen embroidery, sew by machine, weave bone lace, etc. This helped to illustrate how men were brought up to lead society while women were taught to work in the back scenes of society. This emphasizes how women are the backbone of their society. They keep everything running smoothly in the background while the men benefit off of this and do all of the large publicized work.
