Chronicle of a Death Foretold was originally written in Spanish by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The text was published in 1981 in Aracataca, Colombia. The novel was controversial for its time for it involved many topics such as male dominance and a murder. Since the novel became popular in Spanish-speaking countries, especially Colombia, the text has been translated to many languages. It was translated into English by Gregory Rabassa. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a drama that contains Magical Realism, Metaphors, and many other literary devices, but above all, it is well known for its Biblical Allusions. Even though, the quote seems to be altering the reader can understand what Santiago will wear for the day. The Spanish text states,” Santiago Nasar se puso un pantalón y una camisa de lino blanco, ambas piezas sin almidón…”(Márquez 6). The quote allows us to understand that Santiago is a very special day and somehow the outfit could have been better. It somehow makes the reader think Santiago would always wear his linen clothes with starch. The English text gives us a different interpretation. “Santiago Nasar put on a shirt and pants of white linen, both items untouched..” (Marquez 5) The quote allows us to understand that he has a higher position in society for not everyone wears linen but it gives us the idea he is not cocky enough to wear his outfit with starch. Overall, both quotes have an emphasis on how Santiago had worn white allowing us to think of purity. The quotes also allows the reader to think of Christ and how he wore linen. However, Marquez used it as a way to show how society often uses religion for their own purposes. Like the Vicario’s who kill Santiago in the name of God to restore their sister's honor. It questions the role of religion in Colombia’s society. Allowing for us to see the Bishop being very stuck up and a priest who could not prevent a death.
