It is the 3rd leading cause of death worldwide, and the 10th leading cause within the United States for all ages, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2016). For decades, suicide continues to rank higher than homicide or murder especially among women. According to the CDC, there is one death by suicide in the world every 40 seconds with 42,773 deaths attributed to suicide in 2014 (CDC, 2016). As we continue to seek clarification and understanding of this heinous act, we must consider all elements as they play their integrated roles. For example, society has placed many overwhelming expectations on an individual based on appearance, social economic status, and sexual orientation. Those lacking the ability to conform to the culture often find themselves suffering from psychological disorders such as: depression, anxiety, and uncontrollable anger. It is not the death in itself because death is inevitable, but it is the feeling of regret. This regret forces one to question things such as the following: what could I have done to prevent this act? Why did I not see the signs? All these questions form anxiety and depression. These elements is why suicide is often not a topic of discussion until after its occurrence. Humans cope with death based upon the circumstances surrounding the cause. Since, we as a society are unable to reasonable understand the intentional act of causing one 's own death it hinders our ability to cope with the death. According to Santrock (2009), “deaths that are sudden, untimely, violent, or traumatic are likely to have more intense and prolonged effects on surviving individuals and make the coping process more difficult” (p. 631). I was deeply impacted by suicide and it has forever changed the way I view my own and other’s emotional state of mind.
