Advise should be taken with a grain of salt because someone’s advise doesn’t always fit your situation. Yet sometimes, advice doesn’t need to be taken with a grain of salt because it universally applies to everyone. Yolanda Nava was given universal advise by her mother as she describes in the article “A Deathbed Lesson for Life: It’s All in the Frijoles.” When Nava asked her mother what made her strong, her mother told her that it was all in the beans.…

The Argument for the Immortality of the Soul When Socrates and Meno are halted in their argument by a paradox, Socrates proposes a new idea that will solve the paradox and continue their conversation. He states that the soul is immortal and it has learned everything in past lives. Thus, what men call learning is actually a process of recollection. I will first be giving context as to how this idea came into the dialogue with Meno. Next, I will explain how he puts the same idea forward in Phaedo and then noting the differences between the two dialogues.…

In “Why Immortality Is Not So Bad,” Fisher argues that immortality need not to be as bad as William says it would be and is inadequate. He argues that if an immortal life would be characterized by different experiences, there is no reason one to become bored with life. Although william argues that immortality would be as bad, he uses an example to prove it of a woman named EM who is immortal, for drinking a certain potion, and gets bored with life. In the end, she refuses to continue drinking it, because life has become a dull a state of boredom, indifference, and coldness. Williams claims that any kind of eternal life would end up being like this at the in the end, which is boring, meaningless, and undesirable.…

In the novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Marquez befuddles both the narrator and readers with his jarring lack of chronological order by utilising foreshadowing and irony. This sharp change from traditional novella structure allows Marquez to have his readers learn more about Nasar’s murder as they read on and keep them hooked, whilst simultaneously leaving room for plenty of unsolved mysteries. The structure of the novella contributes to highlighting the oddness of Santiago Nasar’s death and enforces the idea of Santiago Nasar’s death being inevitable, despite it being entirely preventable. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is chock full of foreshadowing, straying from traditional foreshadowing with a more blatant approach. Like a broken record, the motif of “on the day he was going to die” or “it was the last time they saw him” remains constant throughout the novella despite its scattered timeline.…

I would publish the poem " No, Love Is Not Dead" by Robert Desnos in Cloud Nine Magazine because the author seems to literally be on "cloud nine. " The poem is about a man that's madly in love with a woman who doesn't feel the same way about him. In the face of rejection, the author explains that he's had enough of "the picturesque, the colorful, and the charming." He would rather feel the deep and contrasting feelings of unrequited love - "I love love, it's tenderness and cruelty."…

The setting, time and place, can have a significant effect on the characters of a novel. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a novel that takes place in a small Colombian coastal town in 1950s. The story examines the murder of the protagonist Santiago Nasar, and the events leading up to it. Colombian culture has a heavy impact on the behaviours, character traits as well as the values of the characters in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. If the text had been written at the present time and if the setting had been a modern city in another place, the murder would not have occurred, and actions of certain characters of the novel would not make sense for certain reasons.…

The author of “On Natural Death” by Lewis Thomas begins his essay by being lighthearted about death and progressively gets more into depth with the aspects of death for different living things and whether or not they detect pain. This is to objectify the fact that death is destined for all living things and that it shouldn’t be planned or feared but instead, it should be accepted. The first strategy Lewis Thompson uses is denouncing books about death. Lewis emphasizes that death is becoming planned with there being “so many new books about dying” placed next to “the health diet and home repair paperbacks”. Lewis insinuates that the topic of planned death is considered ordinary to where it’s placed next to everyday topics and accepted by society who doesn’t think twice about it.…
