Gabriel Marquez’s unique choice of diction and literary allusion creates an allegorical portrait of ideas such as love and death. The choice of diction and literary allusion allowed for Marquez to combine realistic historical narration with fantasy thus creating some of the most notorious stories in the genre known as magical realism. In the story “Death Constant Beyond Love”, one can see the how Marquez’s choice of diction and literary allusion allowed for him to create the fantastical juxtaposition between ideas and philosophies of the main character, Senator Onesimo Sanchez. Senator Onesimo Sanchez cannot seem to accept the inevitable fact of death even though he has previously read the stoic Marcus Aurelius’ 4th Meditation.
In the preface of the story it is made aware that Senator Sanchez has read Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. It is this deliberate choice of incorporating the Meditations as a literary allusion which allows for Marquez to experiment with existential undertones of his allegory in its entirety. Marquez also places it later in the story. This placement allows for a platform of reasoning given Senator Onesimo Sanchez’s dire destructive decisions towards the end of his life. Despite being purveyed with the ideas and philosophies of the Meditation’s; it is his instinctual existence which reduces him down to his impulsive corrupt ways. As the Senator is on the verge of ruining his name and career towards the end of his life, he recollects and reflects on the wise words of Aurelius’ Meditation.

Some critical attention has focused on the unresolved tension between the opposing cultural elements that influence the identities of the characters in Castillo‘s novel, and where her characters find themselves trapped in a fight to place themselves, and establish their own self-identities within a fundamentally modern moment of imperialism, and a Spanish colonial period. Oftentimes in fictional literature, traces of emotions exhibited by characters and events that occur within the fictional work are heavily influenced by the writer’s own dilemmas. This parallel between the writer and the fictional work is demonstrated in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, where the transformation of the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, ultimately represents the guilt the writer is experiencing as a result of his nonfictional conflicts. Throughout many of Kafka’s literary works, the influence his dictatorial father left on him is exhibited, including the novella The Metamorphosis.…
