Death and Leisel are introduces in this section. Death, the narrator, tells the story of how he met and has ties to Leisel, and Leisel being a small, lost girl is just trying to survive in a big lonely world. Leisel always has captured the attention of Death every time he has seen her.
All the three times they have met each other, Death has always taken someone near, and sometimes dear, to Liesel. In all the accidents, Death has seen a color that just sticks out to him. At the railroad track when Death took Leisel’s brother, he saw white. The plane crash made him see black. The mounds of concrete, earth, and the soupy sky made red come to his mind. The attention grabbing little girl may not have known it, but she would had a lot of more tragedy coming her way. In carriage three on the way to her new foster parents, a six year old little boy would not make the trip with his sister. Soon after an intense session of coughing, she now heard no noise from her younger brother, who was sideways and dead. Later due to faulty track work, the

She bring a few pots of snows, and Max and she built their own snowman, which ended up in a snowball fight between the Hubermann’s and Max. Soon after their snowman melted, Max grew very ill and fell into a coma. Max was visited by death, but death decides not to take his soul. As Max lays in his coma, Leisel decided to get him presents from outside, such as pinecones, feathers, and a candy wrapper. She decides that she is going to read her book to Max until he wakes up, but he never wakes up. Since she finished the other book, she decides to go back with Rudy to the mayor’s house and get another book. Finding the window open, she goes into the library and get the book “The Dream Carrier.” It is believe by death that Ilsa keeps the window unlocked in hopes that Liesel will come and steal more books from her
