In Chapter 1 of Dear John, John Tyree, the main character, was introduced. He’s 23 and grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He talked about his dad's hobby of collecting coins ,His dad never talked much and when he did it was only about coins. After high school he realized he needed to do something with his life, so he joined the military. One day he went surfing, and saw a blonde and brunette girl walk to the pier. Two guys came up to them later, and one of them accidently knocked the brunette's purse into the ocean. During the week Savannah was so busy the whole time, they didn't get to spend a lot time together,This led to a big fight between them. John walked out of her apartment, and when he returned later Savannah apologized to him. In Chapter 14, John and Savannah went to spend time with John's dad. Then John had to leave to go back again. Savannah was upset, and John felt like their relationship was unstable because of the time he was away from her. Chapter 14 ends with the attack on September 11. After the attack on September 11, John signed up for two more years in the military.. While he was fighting, he noticed that the letters were coming less often, and the amount that Savannah wrote in them was also becoming less. After John got the letter, he became very angry. On his leaves he would spend the time with his dad. John became worried about him because he wasn't doing very well. Then his dad had another heart attack.He decided to put his dad in extended care facility. Before he moved his dad to the extended care facility, his dad gave him a map of the backyard and pointed to a shovel.
