Dean Edwards Smith was born on February 28, 1931 in Emporia, Kansas. (Dave Nightingdale)

His parents were Alfred Smith and Vesta Smith. Both of his parents were public-school teachers at

Emporia High school and his father was the coach of the varsity basketball team. Dean Smith

graduated and went to the University of Kansas and majored in mathematics, but still played sports

such as varsity baseball, varsity basketball, and freshman baseball. Dean Smith was not just a

respected Coach by other players and coaches, but he was a hero to almost every person who

played for him or knew him.

Dean Smith became the head coach of UNC in 1961. (Dean Smith Biography) The moment he

Coach Smith demonstrated

putting people first by consulting great athletic players such as Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, and

many more. He gave up extra potential years of having those players on his team to help them with

their future instead. Dean Smith had empathy for all wherever he went. He has shown empathy not

only to his own players, but even rivalry players! He always helped them all with whatever they

needed and afterwards they all took it to heart and most of them say that they work hard now,

because they don't want to disappoint Dean Smith. Dean Smith always was honest with everyone

he met and that's why he had such a good relationship with all of his players and others.

Coach Smith is one person that many players look up to. For most people that played for him,

they look more at how much of an influence and hero he was to them. Coach Smith had a great

character and reflected that on his players all the time. For an example, in 1963 Coach Smith lost a

game to Wake Forest. On the way back to UNC campus the entire bus was packed with upset

players and when they got to the campus there were upset fans waiting for them too. The fans
