Every year, approximately 385,000 healthcare employees in the hospital are accidently injured while handling or disposing of needles. In non-acute facilities, 600,000 individuals are injured, including those who are not handling the devices first-hand. A needlestick commonly occurs in the process of disposal, during use on a patient, or after disposal if the device is not properly placed in a sharps container. These statistics can easily be avoided by proper education and training. Needlesticks can happen at any time for any reason. Being careless and hurried can cause an accidental exposure to occur.
