The 2016 Deadpool movie chronicled the origin story of the infamous Merc with a Mouth…but how true did the silver screen version stay to its source material? In order to determine with a viewer would have had to read the 1998 Deadpool Annual. The 1998 comic provides readers with the story of how mercenary Wade Wilson became the hilariously insane Deadpool and opens with the titular character being punched by and unseen assailant off a shot cliff. The fall is enough to seemingly kill the sarcastic mercenary and sends him face to skull with Lady Death. While Deadpool approaches his skeleton lover with amorous intent the lady responds by sinking her bony fingers into his skull and reminding him of how he came to be the super healing dynamo …show more content…
He is finally approached by a military general and offered a place in Canada’s Weapon X program, an actual government sanctioned effort to create superheroes. Unfortunately, he fails out of the program once it becomes clear his cancer is mutated him into an abomination. He finds out that those who fail the Weapon X program are shipped to another location where they are given to the sadistic Dr. Killebrew for experimentation. The comic has two characters for the movie’s Francis character, Dr. Killebrew and a successful superhero experiment The Attending (whose real name is Francis). Not willing to allow his friend to exist as a drooling shadow Wilson snaps his neck, killing him, and breaking the one rule that will force Killebrew to hand down a kill order. Francis gleefully attempts carries out the order and rips out Wilson’s heart. However, Wilson’s rage at Worm’s death jumpstarts his healing ability and, despite his desire for Death, allows him to survive and take his revenge on Francis. The process also drives him insane and he takes the name Deadpool in his delirium. Deadpool then frees the other inmates and “kills” Francis. The comic ends by revealing that Francis survived Deadpool’s attempt to kill him and has taken the name Ajax (similar to the movie character). Of course, Deadpool then hies off to finish the job of killing the man, but the annual does not cover that. The character of Al (the blind woman) is not in the Annual, however Deadpool Classic 1 shows that she is actually an ex-target of Wilson’s that he didn’t kill for some unspecified reason and holds captive in his
