Deadpool Case Study

Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, is one of Marvel’s famous antiheroes. Artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza created him, and his first appearance in comics was in The New Mutants issue number 98. Originally made to be a villain, in later issues he has now evolved into an antiheroic persona. Deadpool’s main power is his accelerated healing factor and physical prowess, both that allow him to be effective in combat. This healing ability originates from being experimented on by Dr. Killebrew for a program called Weapon X. It is mainly because of this experiment that a lot of Wade Wilson’s mental afflictions became exaggerated. Thus, I plan to explore the mental and psychological mind of Deadpool and perhaps answer why he is such a popular character. Untreated mental …show more content…
There exists a lot of criteria that is associated with PTSD, and a brief summary of the DSM-5 states that “exposure from one of the following scenarios” is a source, specifically either “directly experienc[ing] the traumatic event, witness[ing] the traumatic event in person, learn[ing] that the traumatic event occurred to a close family member or close friend,” and finally “experienc[ing] first-hand repeated or extreme exposure to aversive details of the traumatic event” (DSM-5). Deadpool fits into this criteria, since he has been subjected to long amounts of combat exposure, killing countless people himself, or seeing his body being dismembered , witnessing the dead bodies of loved ones, and in general having no support system to help him during the aftermath. This state of isolation may allow for the emotional trauma to fester if left unchecked, and it is impossible for Deadpool to not be affected by these situations, since he still possesses emotional qualities.
