I think he just wants them to succeed without feeling like there is a set-in-stone way of doing that. He believes that there are more important parts of education that affect students’ lives in ways that others do not always see. Poetry is a main component of his classroom teachings. Through the poetry, the boys actually learn about different emotions. They learn how to be compassionate. They learn the true meaning behind courage. They even learn the importance of romance. One student really stuck out to me. Neil Perry had to be one of the kindest and most genuine boys out of that group. Neil had a high passion for acting, and he knew that he was very good at it. It was the only escape he had. Neil’s father did not want Neil to ruin the perfectly good chances he had provided for him. He felt as if Neil took his opportunities for granted, although that was never the case. Throughout the negativity and harshness, I do truly believe that Neil’s father wanted him to succeed in life; however, I also believe that his way of succeeding was the only option that he was willing to give Neil.
