Summary: The First Quote (T.S. Eliot, from “Tradition and the Individual Talent”) This excerpt is talking about how poets and poetry should be analysed; it says that instead of just judging the work in front of you, you need to look at how the work relates or builds upon that of previous poets. I believe that this relates to the movie, The Dead Poet Society for a number of reasons, the first being that the excerpt uses the word “dead poet” when describing whose past work the the current poem should be judged against, this obviously relates to the title of the film, which foreshadows Neil’s own death in movie. The last thing I that I think relates to the movie was the lesson the passage was trying to impart. He wanted to live deliberately, or choose to keep on living and gathering more experiences. This idea relates heavily to the film, Mr. Keating directly quotes, “...live deep and suck out all the marrow of life…”, in the movie. This quote and idea is central Neil’s arch, it is what inspires him to try new things along with Mr. Keating’s teaching style, which draws quite a lot from the main idea of the passage. This newfound enjoyment and exploration of life is what pushes a lot of the boys into things, such as, Knox confessing to Christa, everyone reforming the Dead Poet’s society, Neil taking up acting, and, likely, Neil taking his own life. Neil didn’t want to live passively, he didn’t want to die discovering that didn’t live, which is the core of the reading.
