The article "Earliest People" discusses differences between the Kiffian and the Tenerians. For example, in the article the Kiffians were very tall and stronger because they would always hunt food with protein. The Tenerians were alot shorter and less athletic because they lived 1,000 years later, with not alot of food. When the Kiffians were buried, they would be tied in sacs with their bodies bent over. Tenerians would have more unique burials because they would be buried with jewelery and were posed in different positions.…
In the Mystery Cemetery excavation, all attributes and artifacts are greatly interconnected and useful in order to form logical inferences and observations regarding age, sex, and status. Quick assumptions from individual artifacts would be impossible seeing that one object leads to another, which then correlates to my conclusions for every grave site. The most important grave site that allows all of my observations to be plausible is Burial 10. Because of Burial 10, I am able to determine the sex and status of each burial. Differentiating between age is a matter of skeleton size and its correlation with the type of artifact each are buried with.…
Ashley Reyes Forensic Anthropology Prof. Mires 11/22/17 Dead Men Do Tell Tales Dead Men Do Tell Tales, by William Maples, talks about the most horrific cases of conquistador Francisco Pizarro and Vietnam MIAs to the secretive deaths of President Zachary Taylor and the family of Czar Nicholas the second. Maples is a forensic anthropologist that worked at the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory at the Florida Museum of Natural history. He wrote this autobiography in 1994 and demonstrated how he can find out the age, ethnicity, and gender of any murder victim. Based on his knowledge and understanding, he is able to identify the killer as well.…
It marked the spot in my notebook and gave it a locality number. As I was writing that down, I noticed another piece of bone a few yards away. This was a distal femur—the lower end of a thighbone—also very small. This was a split up the middle so that only one its condyles, or bony bumps that fitted into the shinbone to make a knee joint, was attached.” (Johanson, Edey pg. 155)…

Race has been a controversial topic for decades. Scientists and anthropologists have had opposed views for a very long time and there still is not one accepted belief. One of the most controversial topics revolving around race is the correlation between race and superiority. Although this is not a popular research topic at the present time, this correlation was the subject of many pseudoscience experiments in the early 1800’s. Most of these theories are not accepted in today’s time, but were seen as “positivist” during the time of their discovery.…
I felt a heartfelt happiness when our class saw a video about Joseph Campbell and his wisdom since 《The Power of Myth》 is a book that shapes my view towards myself even the world. Moreover, when I went through my past note of the book, I found some ideas that are surprisingly connected to our class. Therefore, I’m trying to compare knowledge comes from our classes with Campbell’s thought in a organized structure. Everyone are born to be heroes Life is a journey of finding yourself, being true to yourself and getting in touch with yourself.…
At an early age of three years old, children are already aware of stereotypes against gender and ethnic of other individuals, and actually begin to internalize this starting in Kindergarten (“Stereotypes: Myth VS. Fact,”2009). In our society there are many ways that stereotypes can be carried out and they are formed by different sources for everyone. Currently, I am realizing that I have my own false accusations that I need to become more conscious about to improve myself and exclude the bias. Identification of my own bias, the source it came from, and if barriers to my success in healthcare exist are aspects I need in order to increase knowledge and improve comprehension about my perceptions.…
Ralph Ellison wrote the prologue to Invisible Man in 1947. Ellison started off with saying “I am an invisible man”.(Ellison 1) He said that first to draw the reader into the story and with the time period it is a suspicion that he is black. He states that he is like everyone else “I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to possess a mind”.(Ellison 1), but why did Ellison say “I might even be said to possess a mind”? Ellison said that to show the world that he is told what he is that him having a mind is like a myth our some very rare creature.…
The American Dream for many people was to bring out freedom and equality for everyone. In the 1950s and earlier it was hard for African Americans to do what they wanted. If they tried they’d be executed or ignored by many. Back then, all around the world was quite racist. In the 1950s and earlier African Americans were slaves and were used as basically a back bone for a lot of white people.…
In Arthur Maurice Hocarts article “The Life Giving Myth” published in 1953, Hocart gives evidence for his criticisms against the established “kinship extension” that persisted in the 20th century. In comparing the meanings of established “extensions” of non-native kinship terms made between a number of languages, he demonstrates that these “kinship extensions” not only serve to muddle the meaning of the original word but can have disastrous, widespread, effects on our understanding of other cultures. In the article Hocart calls for a solution to the issue of kinship extensions and offers the solution of “neutral notation” which would be similar to phonetic nomenclature. Precisely why this neutral nomenclature is so uncommon is also answered in the article; native words…
Bones found in the archeological dig belonged to cattle, oxen, mule, and a bear (Hardesty). The larger bones showed signs of impact (fractures) and looked like they were sawed, indicating marrow extraction for consumption. The smaller pieces of bone were burnt and calcined (oxidized or reduced) due to low oxygen burning (which occurs at the bottom of a fire) (Hardesty). Larger bone fragments were submitted to a radioimmunoassay (a method to determine proteins in bones and then match them to a certain species (Lowenstein)).…
I reflected on this myth, and continually thought about my childhood and how it has shaped me to who I am now. Currently in my third semester of graduate school, I am finally comfortable with not receiving a grade for every assignment, midterm, and final. I cannot speak from the perspective of a teacher, because I have never been one; but as a student I grew accustomed to receiving a grade on everything I turned in. My mindset for the longest time revolved around accumulating points, and not necessarily mastering a topic. Sackstein writes under myth two, "The learning is what is essential, NOT the grade.…
While growing up my grandparents often watched me and told me various stories and myths. “The term myth has come to refer to a story that isn’t true” (Rio, 2016, p. 3); while taking this definition of myth in mind, I can think of one particular myth my grandparents told me. This myth was about a donkey trapped in a well, the farmer couldn’t get the donkey out so decided to just bury him. Little did he know with each scoop of dirt thrown down on the donkey, he would shake it off and take a step up, eventually making his way out of the well. This myth could be related to religion for the fact that, in my eyes you should never give up, through what I believe in there is always a path set for you by God…
