The Lie The thing that influences identity the most is family, and the stories “Dead End” and “The Lie” prove it. These stories prove it because someone's family situation can affect their choices, a person's family can influence their beliefs, and someone's family name can influence the way they think of themselves. One way that someone's family influences their identity is that the state that their family is in can affect their choices. If the condition of a person's family is bad, as in maybe their parents are constantly fighting, or maybe a child has had to take the role of a parent, then maybe that person will make choices to go along with that, such as trying to make everything better. In "Dead End," Maria's mother valued education, and in turn, Maria valued education. On her mother's deathbed, Maria promised her that she would continue to be educated, and that was the last piece of her mother that she had received. Towards the end of the story, Maria kept her promise to her mother, and she kept her beliefs about how important education is. "Maria didn't want to just disappear, she wanted her life to have a meaning, and that meant keeping to her mother's dream" (5). This quotation shows that her mother's promise was important to Maria, and that she believed that she should do something with her life. Along the lines of education and school, in "The Lie," it was always pushed upon Eli that he should get an education at a school called Whitehill. "'Your father and I have always made you feel that you had to go to Whitehill, that nothing else would do'" (12). This quotation shows that his parents always told him that he should go to this school, and he believed it too, because when he didn't make it in, he felt absolutely terrible, and felt that he should tear up the letter that said that he did not make it in. A person's family influences their identity because they can influence your morals or beliefs, so that they are the
