As the summer of 1962 rolls in, Jack is encaged with an unknown murderer and faces many other mysteries. In the novel, Dead End In Norvelt, the author (Jack Gantos) sends the audience into a thrilling world. In a small town filled to the rim with quirky neighbors lives Jack and his parents. The first day of summer had finally came. The relief flooded him. He was on his picnic table standing up and watching a movie on the big screen through binoculars. He held up his father’s, thought to be unloaded gun, and shot. BANG! Blood spewed everywhere. His nose had started to bleed from the fright (It does this every time he gets emotional). He soon looked up to find his mom looking over him. She was yelling, he was grounded for the rest of the summer …show more content…
One of which is Jack Gantos, Jack is a thirteen year old boy with a nose problem. Every time he gets scared, nervous, intimidated, etc. his nose spews out with blood- GROSS! He is an very obedient, honest, and loving person. Also, he is easily frightened and is an only child. Throughout the novel Jack Gantos grows up and matures. Jack had been grounded on the first day of summer and only gets to spend his time with the quirky old lady who requested his help. Soon to find out, this neighbor is Jacks way out of the room with the lock wooden door his parents put him in. As Jack writes for Miss Volker he is motivated to solve the small town’s mystery murderer. After working with Miss Volker all summer and being grounded, he realizes sometimes you have to so what’s right, and that other times you’ll have to listen to the authority. Over summer’s course many events helped Jack grow in to a better person. Jack is a well developed, and always changing character. Another character was the old lady down the street, Miss Volker. Miss Volker is an old wobbly lady with arthritis aching bones. She isn’t just a medical examiner and obituary writer, she is Norvelt’s. Well-respected in the town of Norvelt, though slightly feared because of her morbid profession, she is definitely "worth her weight in gold". It may go a little to fast or slow at certain points, but the author certainly gets his point across. The author (Jack Gantos) uses many verbs and adjectives that paint images right on the page. His chose of imagery, symbolism, and other figurative language enhances Dead End In Norvelt, and adds a splash of color to this wondrous book. He well explains the plot through first person. The story is told by the main character, Jack Gantos. The theme, you can’t live in the past, is an important life lesson to both the main character (Jack) and the audience. As Jack learns this (and is taught about the importance of his duty) he matures and grows up into a new beautiful
